The Horse Chestnut was introduced into Britain in the 17th century. It is a popular ornamental tree in Parks, gardens, town and village squares, churchyards and in streets.

The tree flowers abundantly from April to mid-May and the flower-spikes (white and sometimes red) are popularly known as 'candles', since they seem to light up the tree. It is native to Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Caucasus and was introduced to Vienna in the 16th century.
